Cataract Surgery

What are cataracts?

Cataracts are a progressive clouding of our crystalline lenses that can occur as we get older. Symptoms of cataracts include progressively worsening blurry vision as well as heightened sensitivity to glare, such as from oncoming headlights while driving. Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide. While most cataracts develop as we get older, they can also be associated with trauma, prior eye surgeries, steroid use, and medical conditions such as diabetes.

Surgical options for cataracts

The most effective method of treating cataracts is with cataract surgery. During cataract surgery, the cloudy lens is removed using ultrasound technology through a tiny incision and an artificial lens is implanted to restore vision. The new intraocular lens implant becomes a permanent part of your eye. Cataract surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, so you can go home right after your surgery. Advanced treatment solutions include laser cataract surgery and premium intraocular lenses. We may recommend toric intraocular lenses to correct your astigmatism or multifocal lenses to allow you to retain your ability to read without glasses after surgery.
