Macular Degeneration

What is macular degeneration?

Macular degeneration (AMD) is an age-related eye condition that affects millions of Americans. Macular degeneration causes decreased central vision and typically leaves peripheral vision intact. There are different types of macular degeneration, including dry macular degeneration and wet macular degeneration. Dry macular degeneration is characterized by gradual and progressive blurring of vision. In contrast, in wet macular degeneration, sudden onset blurring of vision and image distortion can occur. Risk factors include smoking, high blood pressure, a family history of AMD, being overweight, and being over 50 years of age. Though far less common, wet macular degeneration is more serious and will cause faster vision loss.

What are the symptoms of macular degeneration?

The main symptom is blurred central vision. If you have AMD, you may have difficulty seeing fine details in your central field of vision, both for distance and near vision. Your peripheral, or side vision, should still be normal. Most people won’t realize they have dry macular degeneration until their blurry vision gets more advanced. In addition to blurred vision, AMD can cause straight lines to appear wavy or distorted. You may also develop new and abnormal blood vessels, which can bleed and cause an immediate decrease in your vision.

How is macular degeneration treated?

Preventative treatments include AREDS-2 over-the-counter oral vitamins, which are proven to help prevent progression to more advanced stages of AMD. Other treatment options include eye injections that prevent growth of new blood vessels and reduce swelling in the retina. Patients are strongly advised against smoking, since it can make AMD worse.
