Multifocal Implants

Multifocal Implants

Intraocular lenses (IOL) are manufactured lenses used to replace your natural crystalline lens during cataract surgery. During cataract surgery, Dr. Chocron removes the natural lens and inserts a clear lens in its place. There was a time when cataract patients were only offered monofocal IOLs, designed to improve distance vision or near vision, but not both. Most patients chose implants for distance vision. These patients then needed reading glasses or bifocals for both intermediate and near focusing. Today, premium multifocal intraocular lenses are replacing monofocal IOLs because they allow for good vision at most distances. These lenses are often referred to as presbyopia correcting IOLs.

Multifocal IOLs are designed to allow for distance, intermediate, and near focusing to give you clear vision without the use of glasses for most activities. Most of these lenses have concentric rings etched into their surface that allows images from different distances to be focused clearly on the retina. Once your brain adapts to this new way of focusing, multifocal IOLs work surprisingly well.

Since presbyopia correcting IOLs are not considered medically necessary, they are not usually covered by Medicare or other health insurance plans. Monofocal implants, on the other hand, are usually covered by insurance plans and Medicare. Technology for presbyopia correcting IOLs is advancing at a rapid pace and can provide glasses independence for most distance, intermediate, and near vision activities.

Dr. Chocron has experience with the latest technology, including Alcon’s newest PanOptix trifocal lens and Johnson & Johnsons’ extended depth of focus platform of TECNIS Symfony lenses.
