LASIK Surgery

What is LASIK?

LASIK (laser in-situ keratomileusis) is eye surgery that can eliminate your need for corrective contact lenses or eyeglasses. In most cases, having LASIK helps you achieve great vision without glasses. People with mild nearsightedness typically achieve the best success with refractive LASIK surgery. LASIK is not for everyone, and your doctor will perform advanced diagnostic testing to ensure you are a candidate for LASIK vision correction. For some patients, he may recommend PRK (photorefractive keratectomy), which is another form of laser vision correction.

The types of refractive error that can be corrected with laser vision correction include myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Nearsightedness or myopia is where you see nearby objects clearly, but distant objects are blurred. Farsightedness or hyperopia is where you can see far-away objects clearly. Astigmatism causes overall blurriness of vision because your eye is unevenly shaped.

Dr. Chocron offers a free initial LASIK consultation. During your visit, your eyes will be dilated and you will undergo testing on several diagnostic machines that measure corneal thickness and corneal mapping. The visit may take up to 2 hours, so you should plan your day accordingly. Dr. Chocron will discuss your vision goals and develop a customized treatment plan that fits your needs.
