Photorefractive keratectomy, or PRK, is an alternative vision correction surgery that is typically reserved for very nearsighted patients who are not candidates for LASIK. During the procedure, the superficial corneal layer, or epithelium, is removed, and the excimer laser treatment corrects the refractive error of the eye in order to improve vision. PRK may be safer for people who are more likely to be struck in the eye, such as those involved in contact sports, law enforcement, or the military.
