Fuchs’ corneal dystrophy, also called Fuchs’ endothelial corneal dystrophy, is a corneal condition that can lead to decreased vision. It occurs when cells in the endothelium, the inner layer of the cornea, gradually lose their ability to function. These cells normally pump fluid out of the cornea to keep it clear and dehydrated, but when they get damaged, fluid build-up causes the cornea to become swollen. As we age, our crystalline lens becomes harder and less malleable, which makes it difficult to focus on nearby objects. Presbyopia symptoms include the need to make reading material clearer by holding it at arm’s length, blurred vision at normal reading distance and eyestrain from reading.
