Blepharitis

Blepharitis

What is blepharitis?

Blepharitis is a common condition that occurs when the oil glands in your eyelids become inflamed and do not function properly. It is a chronic condition and patients can also experience flare-ups on occasion. Blepharitis is not contagious but requires chronic treatment to improve comfort.

What are the symptoms of blepharitis?

Symptoms of blepharitis may include watery, red eyes and swollen, itchy eyelids. You might feel a gritty, burning or stinging sensation, and your eyelids may appear greasy and crusted, especially when you first wake up after sleep. Flaking skin around your eyes and dry eyes are other common symptoms.

How is blepharitis treated?

First line blepharitis treatment includes gently cleaning the eyelids regularly and warm compresses. In more resistant or aggressive cases, a prescription antibiotic or steroid eye drop can be used. Sometimes, underlying conditions like ocular rosacea will need to be addressed.
