Glaucoma Surgery

What is glaucoma surgery?

Glaucoma treatment often starts with prescription eye drops to reduce your eye pressure. If conservative glaucoma treatment fails to provide sufficient relief, glaucoma laser surgery may be necessary. The most commonly performed laser eye surgery for glaucoma is a laser trabeculoplasty, a procedure that improves fluid drainage and reduces eye pressure. In more advanced cases, your doctor may recommend surgery, such as minimally invasive glaucoma surgery or a glaucoma filtering or tube shunt surgery.

Minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries (MIGS) reduce intraocular pressure by either improving fluid drainage from the eye or decreasing the rate of intraocular fluid production. Dr. Chocron recommends surgical procedures based on the type and severity of the glaucoma and the general health of the patient’s eyes. When medications or laser surgery fail to provide relief, he’ll often recommend an iStent implant or Kahook dual blade goniotomy. These are typically performed at the time of cataract surgery. MIGS surgeries have decreased the number of patients who require more invasive surgery to control their intraocular pressure, such as a glaucoma tube shunt or trabeculectomy.
